SES Staff

Dear Santiam Canyon Community,

Welcome to our monthly newsletter—a vibrant reflection of the happenings and achievements within the Santiam Canyon community. In this edition, you’ll find highlights from the start of our school year, where to find updates on our sports teams, a reminder about the importance of attendance, details about the upcoming American Red Cross Blood Drive at SJHHS, and a link to our monthly board meeting agendas and attachments.

As always, thank you for your continued support of our district. I am so impressed and grateful for the many ways our community shows up—whether attending games, joining us at the SES Open House to meet teachers, or providing support to our staff. It truly takes a village to educate children, and our village is strong!

Please feel free to reach out, introduce yourself, or contact me anytime with questions.

Ms. Nieraeth

In this issue:

The Beginning of the Year!

Our school year is off to a busy and exciting start! Classes began on September 2, and our staff and students have been off to the races ever since.

At the elementary school, students and staff have been working hard to establish routines and dive into learning. Students have already completed the STAR test, giving our teachers valuable information to help target specific skills and support maximum growth in both reading and writing. We also had an AMAZING turn out for our Open House on September 11th. Nachos were eaten, Kona Ice was consumed, and families were able to meet their child's teacher and see the classrooms. Thank you to all who attended!

At the junior high and high school, students are engaged in their classes and working on expanding their horizons. A special highlight was when our 6th graders attended Outdoor School at Camp Meriweather in Cloverdale this September—they had an amazing time! Homecoming week will be the week of October 6th. The Leadership class and ASB are scheduling fun events for our school and community. Be on the lookout for more information on our website and Social Media pages.

We are always looking for volunteers to help us in our classrooms and on field trips. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the front office of either school for a volunteer packet.

We are so grateful to our staff and students for helping make the start of the year such a success.

And finally, a big thank you to the North Santiam Eagles for their generous donation of school supplies to both SES and SJHHS, as well as all of the community support of our staff and students. Your support is truly appreciated!

Attendance is IMPORTANT

Regular attendance is one of the biggest keys to student success!

When students show up every day, they have the best chance to learn, grow, and keep pace with their peers. Too many absences, however, can make it tough to stay on track.

The state of Oregon defines a regular attender as a student who attends school 90% or more of the time.

Elementary (K–3): Students who attend regularly are more likely to read at grade level.

Middle School: By 6th grade, poor attendance is one of the strongest warning signs that a student may not finish high school.

High School: By 9th grade, attendance predicts graduation more accurately than 8th-grade test scores.

Let’s help our students succeed! Every day counts!

Santiam Canyon School District is committed to having our students at school regularly. Please reach out to your child's school if you have any questions.
